If you build with AI tools, you've probably noticed the word "skills" everywhere lately. Claude Code skills, Cursor rules, agent skills marketplaces popping up left and right. It's become its own category, and plenty of people are now searching for the best Claude skills to plug into their workflow.

Design skills are one of the most useful kinds, because design is where AI tools struggle most. Here's a guide to what they are and which ones are worth your time.

What a design skill is

A design skill is a file (or a small set of files) that teaches your AI coding tool how to design in a specific style. Usually that means a SKILL.md with design guidelines and instructions for applying them, plus a DESIGN.md that your project references every time it builds a new page. What is a DESIGN.md file? →

Instead of typing "make it look modern and clean" into every prompt and hoping, you give the AI an exact spec. Colors, fonts, spacing, components, and rules. It builds everything to match.

These agent skills design files work across tools: Claude Code, Cursor, Lovable, v0, Bolt, Replit, and Windsurf.

What makes a good design skill

Not all skills are equal. Look for:

  • Exact values. Hex codes, font names, pixel sizes. Vague direction like "dark and moody" leaves too much to guesswork.
  • A DESIGN.md. This is what keeps screen ten matching screen one.
  • Component rules. How buttons, cards, inputs, and navigation should look.
  • A "don't" list. Telling the AI what to avoid matters as much as what to do.
  • Real previews. You should be able to see what the skill produces before you use it.

Standout design skills by use case

For SaaS and startups: Modern SaaS (free) nails the Linear and Vercel look. Clean (free) gives you that well-funded startup polish. AI SaaS is built for AI-native products.

For dashboards: Fintech Dashboard (free) for financial data. SaaS Dashboard for analytics. Hyper Minimal Dashboard for calm, focused data. Crypto Dashboard for trading tools.

For animated backgrounds: Light Ripple (free), Aurora Background, Interactive Constellations, Shooting Stars, and Cosmic Meteor Background. Instant atmosphere for any hero.

For bold aesthetics: Neobrutalism (free), Glassmorphism (free), Cyberpunk, Maximalism, Dark Academia, and Hand Drawn.

For immersive pages: Cinematic Scroll for scroll-driven video sites, and Biophilic for nature-themed scroll pages.

For something different: Pixel Art, Vaporwave, Kawaii, Bauhaus, Art Deco, and Memphis.

Where to start

If you're new to cursor design skills or design skills for AI coding in general, grab a free one first. Modern SaaS or Dark Luxury are great starting points. Drop it into your project, run a prompt you've used before, and compare the result. Most people see the difference immediately.
